Splash! The mama green sea turtle just finished laying her eggs on the Hawaiian beach, and is now back in the ocean. Green sea turtles are extremely huge, with a shell about 3.5 feet wide and weighing up to 400 pounds. These magnificent creatures are normally found in the waters along the coasts of many different continents and islands.
Sea turtles are reptiles. These animals have unique features allowing them to do things that turtles on land can’t do. Sea Turtles have a light shell allowing them to glide through water. They also have flippers instead of feet; which allows them to swim long distances. Also, because they are reptiles, they need to breathe air. They can hold their breathe for about forty minutes, before they have to come back to the surface. Sea turtles migrate to warmer waters. The female sea turtles return to the land where they were born about every two years to lay their eggs, while the male turtle stays in sea water their whole life.
Another unique feature that these turtles have is that they have a special kind of beak that allows them to tear their food. Their vegetation diet gives them a greenish color, which is also how the green sea turtle got its name. As babies, the green sea turtle was actually an omnivore. They feed on animals such as Jelly fish. Once it becomes an adult, the sea turtle starts to feed on sea grasses and algae and no longer eats any animals.
These creatures have a magical life; except for one thing. The Green Sea Turtles are extremely endangered. The number of these turtles left is about 1,600. Many of these beautiful creatures are killed by plastic or litter in the water, as well as oil spills. Sea turtles also have many predators. One example of a predator that eats Sea turtles are the Tiger Sharks. Another reason these animals are about to go extinct is many different animals eat turtle eggs. Some examples of these animals are raccoons, foxes, dogs, Sea gulls, and crabs. With humans being a sea turtle’s greatest fear. People disturb nesting beaches, pollute, and fish in ways that harm turtles.
Since we are human, we are Sea turtles greatest fear. We shouldn’t be the enemy, we should be the friend. We should help these poor creatures. Sea Turtles are one of the most amazing and beautiful creatures in our oceans. We could keep sea turtles from extinction if we commit to it. We could save many lives.
