What are the biggest but most gentle creatures on Earth? That’s right, Whale Sharks! Whale sharks are the largest shark and fish on Earth! Their size ranges from 18 to 32.8 ft (5.5 to 10m), and their average weight is 20.6 tons! That’s about the same size as an average school bus! They are fascinating species, but are unfortunately threatened, and there are very few still alive in the world. That is why we must all work hard to stop others from catching and killing these fascinating creatures! So, let’s take a journey through this marvelous creature’s unfathomable anatomy.
Whale sharks are estimated to be 70cm at birth, and can grow up to 10 meters, attaining a weight of 20.6 metric tons. The longest whale shark ever found was 40 feet (12.2 meters) and the species is expected to grow even larger! Their epidermis or skin may reach a thickness of over 100mm. Whale sharks are classified in the group of fish, and are among the rhinocondon typus. They bare distinctive yellow markings (random stripes and dots) on their extremely thick gray dark skin. Their group name is”school” but they usually travel alone. They can live from 100 to 150 years old! Also, when female whale sharks give birth, another female will help her. This shows that whale sharks are actually quite cooperative.
Whale sharks are predators to tiny fish and krill. They use their gargantuan mouths to suck up all of their prey and water around it. Although they have over 3,000 very tiny teeth, they are 100% harmless to people. In, fact, they are considered to be one of the most gentle and peaceful creatures on Earth, swimming with the divers. Whale sharks are prey to almost no other sea creature. However, there have been recent sightings of bite marks on their epidermis. Also, humans hunt these creatures for their fins to make strong medicine to cure diseases. Therefore, they are threatened. We must not let these beautiful creatures perish!
Most whale sharks live in warm waters near the equator. They are capable of diving to depths of over 1,286 meters (4,219 ft). Whale sharks are migratory, and usually move to warmer waters when the temperature decreases.
In conclusion, whale sharks are one of the most interesting sea creatures that roam the ocean deep. Unfortunately, they are endangered, so we must take action to save these marvelous creature!
