The Sunlight Zone (Epipelagical Zone)
By: Alex H., Bradley H., Omar A., and Will M.
The Sunlight Zone is unique from the other zones, because it receives the most amount of light, making it the most eligible for ocean life. Therefore, it is the zone with the most percentage of ocean life. Over 90% of the ocean’s creatures live in the sunlight zone. On average, the sunlight zone ends at about 300 feet, but varies depending on the murkiness of the water. Furthermore, there are many plants that grow in this zone. Moreover, because of the abundance of light during the day, photosynthesis can take place, providing a plentiful amount of food and oxygen.
Over 90% of the ocean’s creatures live in the Sunlight Zone! One of the biggest species of fish that live in the Sunlight Zone are the sharks. There are also thousands of species of fish, echinoderms, and plankton. This is why snorkelers are always able to experience a large variety of fish swimming around them! The reason why so much marine life can grow in this zone is because the pressure is not high, and the temperature of the water is not too cold for them.
Sunlight Zone Facts
By: Tess F.
-The Sunlight Zone's plants are called Phytoplankton
-Half of our the air that we breate comes from Phytoplankton
-Phytoplankton are microscopically sized
-There are billions of phytoplankton floating in our seas
-They come in all different shapes/sizes
-They reproduce every day
